Concise Biography

CLAY, Joseph, (grandfather of William Henry Stiles), a Delegate from Georgia; born in Beverly, Yorkshire, England, October 16, 1741; immigrated to the United States and in 1760 settled in Savannah, Ga., where he engaged in the general commission business; elected a member of the council of safety June 22, 1775; delegate to the Provisional Congress which met in Savannah July 4, 1775; major in the Georgia Line of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War; appointed by the Continental Congress deputy paymaster general in Georgia with the rank of colonel August 6, 1777; elected to the Continental Congress in 1778, but did not attend; original trustee of Franklin College, Athens, Ga.; elected treasurer of Georgia in July 1782; judge of the United States Court for the District of Georgia 1786-1801; died in Savannah, Ga., November 15, 1804; interment in Colonial Park Cemetery.

The papers include legal and business papers of Joseph Clay, Sr., including a volume of depositions made before Joseph Clay as senior assistant judge of Chatham County, Georgia. The depositions are from several mariners from the brigantine Bachelor, concerning charges that the brigantine was supplying aid to British troops at Charleston, SC.
Papers: In the Nathaniel Pendleton Papers, 1781-1782, 3 items. The papers include a letter from Joseph Clay to Nathaniel Pendleton concerning supplies for the Georgia troops and the seizure of British cargo ships.

Papers: 1765-1923, 2 boxes. The papers in this collection include five letter books of Joseph Clay dating from 1766-1802. Four of the letter books are published and one book, dating from 1785-1802, has not been published. The letter books relate to Joseph Clay's business as a merchant and his work as Deputy Paymaster General. There are three folders of letters and papers, including those of his son, Joseph Clay, Jr. and great-great-grandson William Law Clay.
