Description
The Judiciary Committee used this map while considering anti-lynching legislation introduced during the 67th Congress by Representative
Leonidas Dyer. The map showed the number and location of lynchings throughout the United States from 1889 to 1921. The numbers of lynchings were printed in bright red against the stark black outline of the United States. A thick red line separated northern states from the South. According to the map, southern states accounted for 88 percent of lynchings during this period, and 87 percent of southern Representatives voted against an anti-lynching bill. In 1922, the House passed Dyer’s anti-lynching measure, but the bill failed in the Senate.
