Description

In this letter to Joseph Waggonner, chairman of the Committee on House Administration’s Special Subcommittee on Electrical and Mechanical Office Equipment, Representative Fletcher Thompson expressed concern that the proposed electronic voting system would make his job more cumbersome. Members would each get a unique voting card, which they would insert into a voting station to record their choices. “Can the vote card also be made a Congressional I.D. card?” he wrote. “I don’t want any more cards to carry around.” The new system, which cost about $1 million, debuted in January 1973.
