Lilies and ferns rested on the rostrum in silent tribute to Speaker Nicholas Longworth, who died suddenly in April 1931. Atop the wreath lay the gavel Longworth used to adjourn Congress just a month earlier. Such memorial tributes were often part of mourning the death of Speakers and former Speakers.
