This glass shade adorned the lighting fixtures in the Cannon Caucus Room, the most ornately decorated space in the 1908 House Office Building. The sandblasted design includes several motifs seen throughout the Capitol. The Liberty cap, surrounded by a laurel wreath, floats above a spread eagle and the motto “E Pluribus Unum.” This grouping is linked by decorative elements to Roman fasces and the head of an American Indian, symbolizing authority and North America, respectively.
