Object Details

This is the last seating chart made for the House of Representatives. After the Members went home at the end of the 62nd Congress, the House pulled out all the desks. The loss was a casualty of increasingly cramped quarters in the Chamber and increasingly ample space in the new House Office Building across the street. Upholstered theater-style seating appeared, and Members could sit wherever they wished. True to traditions dating to the 1840s, Representatives still sat with their fellow party members, divided by the center aisle, both in this chart and in the open seating that followed in 1913.
