When he was a newly elected Speaker, this portrait and profile of Michael Kerr were published in Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper. The image is based on Mathew Brady’s photo of Kerr and is a typical Member’s public image for the period—including the House Chamber chair seen in numerous photographic portraits. The profile described Kerr as a man who “possessed dauntless courage” and whose “power of logic made him a most powerful antagonist.”
