Fisher Ames routed the aged firebrand Samuel Adams in the 1788 House election to the First Congress. He went on to serve eight years as a darling of the emerging Federalist Party until poor health forced his retirement. This popular print was based on a Gilbert Stuart portrait now in the National Portrait Gallery.
