Future Representative Wilmer Mizell of North Carolina was known as “Vinegar Bend” during his professional baseball career, a reference to his Alabama hometown. Mizell pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the New York Mets before entering Congress, where he led the Republicans to victory six times in the annual Congressional Baseball Game.
