Prior to depicting the same subject in a painting for the House Committee on Indian Affairs, Seth Eastman provided this illustration for Henry Rowe Schoolcraft’s six-volume Historical and Statistical Information Respecting the History, Condition and Prospects of the Indian Tribes of the United States (1852). The earlier iteration of a meeting of Native American leaders includes fewer details than the subsequent painting. but does contain the anachronistic—and geographically unusual—presence of Red Jacket, a famous Iroquois chief from 18th century New York, in this meeting of Dakota in 19th century Minnesota.
