Object Details

Referred to as a “fairy palace” for Members in news accounts of its opening in 1908, the House Office Building—now the Cannon House Office Building—provided working space for each Member of Congress, as well as luxuries such as telephone service and hot and cold running water. The Beaux-Arts architecture was impressive but understated, so as not to compete with the Capitol across the street.
