In this 1932 photograph, Minnesota Congressman Melvin J. Maas sports a handkerchief inscribed “We Want Beer” to show his support for repeal of the National Prohibition Act, also known as the Volstead Act. Prohibition remained in effect from 1919 to 1933, and Maas made its repeal one of the major efforts of his congressional career.
