Object Details

Looking down from the Capitol’s dome, a photographer captured a summer’s day in Washington in the late 1870s. The immediate surroundings were grassy and grand. Beyond their bounds, East Capitol Street stretched into the distance, with the Maryland hills on the horizon. Streetcar tracks are visible along the street, making a turn to the north to skirt the grounds. On the right, a row of white townhouses known as Carroll Row sits conveniently close to the Capitol. Members of Congress often boarded there in the early years of the capital city.
