Object Details

Photographers of the 1860s enjoyed the Capitol’s western grounds. Producing stereoviews like this one took advantage of the parklike setting. The fountains, installed in 1859, sometimes sprayed as high as 100 feet. Montgomery Meigs, the engineer behind the water features and legion other Washington building projects, almost burst his buttons with pride at bringing water from the Potomac to the Capitol via aqueduct. “I wish you could see it, my jet d’eau [water jet] in the Capitol Park,” he wrote his father. “I look upon it with constant pleasure.”
