Object Details

The West Front of the Capitol gave visitors a bucolic setting for rambles and concerts. Tree-lined walks led to the Capitol’s steps. Once upon a time, the trees framed the approach perfectly, but by the 1870s, they made it nearly impossible to get a good eyeful of the building. The maker of this stereoview mitigated the leafy interference by choosing the winter months for the photography.
