Object Details

The approach to the Capitol’s West Front was a popular spot in the 19th century. A quiet area in the midst of the bustling city, its big trees and cast-iron benches beckoned to visitors. By the 1880s, new expansion and landscaping of the area began in earnest, and the noise of construction found its way even to this shady pathway.
