Object Details

A photographer captured seven scythers on a balmy summer day in the 1870s, after they had trimmed the grass on the Capitol grounds. A few local boys along the fountain’s rim wandered onto the scene. In the 1870s, photography was not instantaneous, giving a ghostly appearance to objects in motion.
