Although he was the Speaker of the House in the capital, John Nance Garner was known as “Cactus Jack” in Uvalde, Texas. Garner, with long-time fishing partner Ross Brumfield, took horseback rides around cattle ranges and hunting trips through the Southwest. He displayed the haul from his first fishing trip of 1932 in this photograph. Brumfield told the Boston Globe that Garner’s favorite sport was neither hunting nor fishing, but camp cooking.
