POLK, John W., a Doorkeeper from Missouri; born in Logansport, Cass County, Ind., 1820; attended local schools; trader; served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War; Egyptian Army, 1875–1877; elected Doorkeeper of the United States House of Representatives for the Forty-fifth Congress and served until his dismissal on April 4, 1878 (October 15, 1877–April 4, 1878); died on February 13, 1902, in Kansas City, Mo.; interment in Woodlawn Cemetery, Independence, Mo.
