Description

In a handwritten note on this form petition, Val Dunkle pressed Congress to “get busy now” and recognize the square dance as the National American Folk Dance. Square dancers from around the country wrote to their Representatives arguing that their hobby was an American tradition that promoted values, manners, and etiquette. However, many fellow citizens disagreed that the square dance represented the diverse heritage of the country. To date, Congress has not permanently recognized a national folk dance.
