Capitol (Congressional Chamber), Washington, D.C., U.S.A. Stereoview

Stereoview with two nearly identical black and white photographs of the empty House Chamber, arranged side by side on mauve cardboard. Reverse of stereoview with printed text reading, “The Hall of Representatives is unsurpassed in size and beauty by any legislative chamber in the world. It occupies the central portion of the south extension of the Capitol, and is 139 feet in length, 93 feet in width, and 30 feet high. The ceiling, by which the room is lighted, is constructed of glass panels set in an iron framework and bearing the arms of the states. The white marble desk of the Speaker stands on a dais in the center of the south side around which are arranged the desks of the Representatives in concentric rows, intersected by radiating aisles. The name of the occupant is engraved on a silver plate on each desk. Among the beautiful and valuable paintings that adorn the walls are full-length portraits of Washington and Lafayette, presented to Congress by Lafayette on his last visit to this country. The room is surrounded by galleries whence visitors may watch the proceedings of the legislative body. These galleries will seat 1,200 persons, and are reached from the east and west corridors by stairways of Tennessee marble.”/tiles/collection/5/51812.xml
