Object Details

On February 27, 1902, Secretary of State John Hay eulogized President William McKinley months after his assassination. Politicians, Supreme Court Justices, diplomats, and spectators sat somberly in the House Chamber. This crisp image captures details of the event: Theodore Roosevelt’s focused gaze, Chinese Ambassador Wu Tingfang leaning forward in his second-row chair, and women in the gallery using opera glasses to get a better view.
