Benigno Hernández was the first Hispanic American from New Mexico to serve as a U.S. Representative. Voters elected him in 1914, two years after New Mexico was admitted as a state. Like many other politicians in the capital, Hernández sat for a portrait at the studios of Harris & Ewing, the leading photographers of official Washington.
