Chicago native Fred Britten was elected to the House in 1912 and served for 22 years. A strong advocate for the Navy, he chaired the Committee on Naval Affairs from 1927 to 1930, and signed this photograph to Lt. Commander George Calver, the Navy doctor then serving as the House's Attending Physician. Britten's experience as a lightweight boxer in his younger years served him well in the sometimes contentious halls of Congress.
