Representatives Oren Harris (left) and Steven B. Derounian, members of the House Subcommittee on Legislative Oversight, conferred during the investigation of whether popular television quiz shows of the 1950s were rigged to favor one contestant over the other. Television executives and program sponsors were accused of providing answers to contestants in an effort to boost ratings and product sales. Ironically, the hearings were not televised because Speaker Sam Rayburn felt the presence of television cameras would undermine the dignity of the House.
