Scenes from the House Chamber made frequent appearances in the illustrated weekly papers. Here, a message from the President was read to a full Chamber, with the perspective from the visitor’s gallery providing a view of all the grand features of the room, including the Albert Bierstadt landscapes and the portraits of George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette.
