This hand-colored steel engraving from a German publication appears to be modeled after the illustration “Principle Front of the Capitol” from William Bartlett’s publication American Scenery. The East Front—at the time, considered the grand entrance to the building—is shown here, with the dome and wings completed but the grounds still bare. The widespread reproduction of Bartlett’s images indicates the authority they assumed in disseminating information about the United States abroad.
