Object Details

Prior to depicting the subject in a painting for the House Committee on Indian Affairs, Seth Eastman provided this illustration for Henry Rowe Schoolcraft’s six-volume Historical and Statistical Information Respecting the History, Condition and Prospects of the Indian Tribes of the United States (1852). A woman works in a closed, domestic space, which includes a winter tipi and a small boy playing a wind instrument. The preparation of skins for use—in clothing and for dwellings such as the one included here—was traditionally women’s work that was both time and labor intensive.
