Object Details

Nineteenth-century photographers delighted in capturing the view from the Capitol’s dome, and with specially designed stereo cameras, they were able to create 3-D images. This is one of the rarest scenes, a view looking southwest across the House wing roof and to the Potomac River in the distance. More commonly, armchair travelers preferred cards with Pennsylvania Avenue and the White House to the swampy, hardscrabble southwest.
