Object Details

One early spring day in the 1870s, a photographer climbed to the Capitol’s top to capture this image of carriages and new landscaping in front of the House steps. Frederick Law Olmsted's design introduced curving drives through the grounds. Across the street, T. Hunt Brock’s new hotel (“boarders accommodated with delightful airy and well-ventilated rooms,” according to advertisements) commanded a corner lot. Today, the Cannon House Office Building’s main entrance occupies the hotel's spot.
