Object Details

Shortly after he began his career in Congress as the longest-serving Resident Commissioner of the Philippines, Pedro Guevara and his secretary J.E. Espina visited President Calvin Coolidge at the White House, here photographed as they left that meeting. The new Resident Commissioner bore a request for support on the issue that guided his career in Washington: he asked Coolidge to declare support for Philippine independence in his upcoming message to Congress. “For 25 years I and my people have lived under the American flag," Guevara declared a few months earlier, "yet... Americans know very little about us or our country, and they care even less than they know.”
