Oliver Belmont, Representative and scion of a wealthy New York family, built Belcourt, his grand summer home, in Newport, Rhode Island. The mansion had elaborate stained glass windows, blood-red damask curtains, and stables on the first floor for Belmont’s thoroughbred horses. He was one of a small number of Members of Congress whose houses so magnificent they were de facto destinations for sightseers, no matter who the owners were.
