Object Details

A 1901 refurbishment of the Speaker’s Lobby and Member’s Retiring Room introduced new chairs and sofas. The Library of Congress’ recent opening motivated the adaption of an updated look for the turn of the century. The tufted-back armchairs had a simple, boxy silhouette. The carved arm rest supports, with axe-headed fasces and an egg-and-dart border, were the primary decorative element. The chairs remained in use until the 1970s.
