Object Details

The first fresco of the Capitol extension is barely visible at the top of this stereoview of the House Committee on Agriculture room. Constantino Brumidi's painting depicted the classical subject of the retired Roman general Cincinnatus summoned from his farm back to service. It served both as a history lesson and a reminder of the importance of agriculture in the United States. Allegorical representations of the four seasons; a view of the McCormack reaper; and portraits of farmers-turned U.S. presidents, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, add to the thematically-appropriate fresco décor.
