Minority Leader Bertrand Snell participated in an unusual debate in 1937. Carb-laden competitors Idaho and Maine competed to see which state produced the tastiest tuber. Snell sampled a spud during a Maine-Idaho potato contest, which unfolded in the Speaker’s Room of the House Restaurant. The competition was judged by Resident Commissioners and Territorial Delegates. Despite the fanfare, the contest ended in a tie, leading Snell to joke that “the final result seems to be a toothache for the county.”
