As the institution expanded to a new office building and district offices became ever more active, the need to stay in real-time contact grew. Across the Capitol campus and across the continent, Representatives and their staff members were at the start of a revolution in technology that would encompass toll-free numbers, then fax machines, and by the end of the century, the internet.
