Martha Griffiths, who autographed this card in 1960, became known as the “Mother of the Equal Rights Amendment.” She paid great attention to workplace discrimination against women. On one occasion, she grilled an executive from an airline that fired a soon-to-be-married flight attendant: “You are asking a bona fide occupational exception that a stewardess be young, attractive, and single. What are you running, an airline or a whorehouse?”
