This ambitious 1896 publication began with a brief history of the founding of the United States, census information, and military pension statistics. This was followed by generously illustrated essays describing the Capitol and its contents, the White House, all the federal buildings, monuments, parks, and universities in Washington, among other topics. It concluded with biographies of every federal legislator, each pictured in a half-tone photo within a decorative montage of his state delegation.
