Object Details

This well-used stamp imprinted the seal of the Speaker of the House into melted wax, a common practice on early documents. The Speaker’s seal consists of the top of the House mace on a field of 13 stars and the date “1789” (denoting the year of the First Federal Congress). On this stamp, the image is circled with the words “Seal of the Speaker” and “United States House of Representatives.” The design of the seal first appeared in the middle of the 20th century, on gallery passes and ceremonial items.
