Object Details

After he lost his re-election bid to represent a Pennsylvania district in the House, Edward McPherson was elected by his colleagues to serve as Clerk of the House in 1863. He was the sixth former Member of Congress to serve as Clerk. Harper’s Weekly published this image of McPherson soon after the Republicans regained control of the House and reinstated him as Clerk in 1881.
