Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dan Rostenkowski’s portrait was unveiled on April 27, 1983. Robert Dewar Bentley received the commission for the three-quarter length portrait. The artist began painting later in life, after a career in business, and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. The portrait is vaguely set in an office, with an indeterminate background streaked with green and blue highlights. Strong lighting on the right side of the painting emphasizes the subject, who stands firmly with his arms crossed, but with a hint of a smile, conveying an impression of both determination and humor.
