SERGEANT, Nathan, a Sergeant at Arms from Vermont; born in Putney, Windam County, Vermont, May 5, 1794; educated in Vermont; admitted to the bar; county and probate judge, Cahawba, Ala; established a Whig newspaper in Buffalo, New York; journalist, Washington, DC; elected Sergeant at Arms of the U.S. House of Representatives for the Thirtieth Congress (December 8, 1847–February 15, 1850); author; register of the United States Treasury, 1851–1853; commissioner of customs, 1861–1870; died on February 2, 1875, in Washington, D.C.; interment in Rock Creek Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
