Biography
RYAN, William Fitts, A Representative from New York; born in Albion, Orleans County, N.Y., June 28, 1922; attended the Albion schools; graduated from Princeton University in 1947 and from Columbia Law School in 1949; was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of law in New York City in 1949; assistant district attorney, New York County, 1950-1957 and 1957-1961; served in the United States Army in the Thirty-second Infantry Division as an artillery officer with the rank of first lieutenant from 1943 to 1946, in the South Pacific; delegate, Democratic National Convention, 1968; elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-seventh Congress; reelected to the five succeeding Congresses and served from January 3, 1961, until his death in New York City, September 17, 1972; interment in St. Thomas Church Cemetery, Croom, Md.

The collection of William Fitts Ryan contains congressional, personal, and business papers, as well as photographs and memorabilia. Included are records of his congressional career (1961-1972) covering the political development of the Democratic Party in New York City and the liberal caucus in the House of Representatives. The papers also consist of correspondence with constituents and leaders in government, politics, education, and the peace and civil rights movements; legislative and research material relating to programs of social progress during the Kennedy-Johnson years; speeches; reports and memoranda; campaign files (1960-1972); and diaries (1952-1972). Restrictions: Materials relating to: personal, family, or confidential business affairs of living persons who have corresponded with Congressman Ryan; sensitive personnel matters; or those items which might be used to embarrass, damage, injure, or harass any living person are closed until the conditions for the restriction no longer apply.
