MAFFITT, John Newland, a House Chaplain; born in Dublin, Ireland, December 28, 1795; educated in Dublin, Ireland; entered the New England conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, 1822; itinerant preacher, 1823–1835; newspaper founder; editor; agent, La Grange College, Leighton, Ala.; elected Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives to the Twenty-seventh Congress (December 13, 1841–August 31, 1842); licensed to preach by Methodist Episcopal Church, South, 1847; died on May 28, 1850, in Mobile, Ala.
