Biography

GRAY, Edwin, a Representative from Virginia; born in Southampton County, Va., July 18, 1743; educated at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va.; served in the colonial House of Burgesses, 1769-1775; member of the State conventions in 1774, 1775, and 1776; member of the State house of delegates in 1776, 1779, 1787, 1788, and 1791; member of the Virginia state senate, 1777-1779; elected as a Republican to the Sixth and to the six succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1799-March 3, 1813); died in Nansemond County, Va.; death date unknown.

Account, Jan., 1774, in the handwriting of Nottaway Indians trustee Edwin Gray, who signed the document, itemizing payments to members of the tribe for the rental of their lands during 1773. Among the Indians receiving shares of the total sum (£74-4-6) were members of the Gabriel, Quaker, Woodson, John, Pearch, Scholar, Roger, Step, Meriot, Wincoke, and Turner families.
