GARLAND, Hugh A., a Clerk from Virginia; born in Nelson County, Va., June 1, 1805; graduated from Hampden-Sydney College, Hampden Sydney, Va., 1825; professor; admitted to the bar in 1831; lawyer; member of the Virginia state house of delegates, 1833–1838; elected Clerk of the United States House of Representatives to the Twenty-fifth and to the succeeding Congress (December 3, 1838–May 31, 1841); died on October 14, 1854, in St. Louis, Mo.; interment in Bellefontaine Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.
