The papers include a letter, 1832 Dec. 4, from John Anderson in Washington, to Lewis Cass, secretary of war, requesting that land conveyed to the United States by Rev. Thomas Smith, Falmouth, Maine, for construction of harbor fortifications be reconveyed to Anderson, a Smith descendant. The papers also contain drafts of two speeches, undated, by Anderson prepared for delivery in the U.S. House of Representatives, upholding justice of claim against the U.S. by Commodore Edward Preble, Portland, Maine, for share of prize money due from capture and destruction of frigate Philadelphia during the Barbary War.
