WHEATON, Joseph, a Sergeant at Arms from Rhode Island; born in New York, in 1755; served in the Revolutionary War, Rhode Island Line; elected Sergeant at Arms for the U.S. House of Representatives in the First Congress and for the succeeding nine Congresses (May 12, 1789–October 27, 1807); served in the War of 1812; died on November 23, 1828, in Washington, D.C.
