GURLEY, Ralph Randolph; a House Chaplain; born in Lebanon, New London County, Conn., May 26, 1797; graduated from Yale University, New Haven, Conn., 1818; licensed to preach in the Presbyterian Church, 1822; agent, American Colonization Society, 1822–1872; secretary, American Colonization Society, 1825; writer; editor; elected Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives for the Twenty-first Congress (December 13, 1830–March 3, 1831); and for the Thirtieth Congress and the succeeding Congress (December 14, 1847–March 3, 1851); died on July 30, 1872, in Washington, D.C.
