GIVEN, Josiah, a Postmaster from Iowa; born in Westmoreland County, Pa., August 31, 1828; educated in district schools; United States Army, 1847–1848, 1861–1865; read law and passed bar in 1850; county prosecutor; lawyer, private practice; elected Postmaster of the United States House of Representatives to the Thirty-ninth Congress (December 4, 1865–March 5, 1867); Polk County, Iowa district attorney, 1872–1875; member of the Iowa state house of representatives, 1876–1878; Iowa state circuit judge, 1880; United States district judge for the Northern District of Iowa, 1886–1889; associate and chief justice, Iowa state supreme court, 1889–1901; died on February 3, 1908, in Des Moines, Iowa; interment at Woodland Cemetery, Des Moines, Iowa.
